Carpet design for HUMMEL headquarters
Hummel headquarters in Denmark wanted a carpet to be the centerpiece of the upstairs office. It had to be 21 meters long and 1,5 meter wide.I have designed the artwork.
They wanted to portray all the football jerseys which through the years have been important to the Hummel brand.
My vision was to create some artwork which would make the rest of the carpet able to blend in with the jerseys, so the carpet had a coherent expression, rather than just a bunch of woven jerseys on the floor. I chose to work with simple and sharp graphic shapes which resonated with the jerseys that would be woven.
The specifications regarding the artwork, colors and measurements were shipped to Nepal, where it was handwoven be the same company who has woven the carpets for Amalienborg currently resided by Frederik and Mary.
After end of production the entire carpet was shipped back to Denmark ready to be rolled on the floor. This whole weaving process as you can imagine took some months. The most challenging thing was for the weavers to interpret my straight and sharp lines whilst weaving by hand, this took some adjusting back and forth. I however feel the softness of the lines make the carpet feel more alive so I am very pleased with their accomplisment.
A the bottom of this post you can se the artwork before the weaving started. The design is inverted at the middle, so the artwork on one half is the same as on the other half.
