On collage no. 4 and 5 wanted to get more depth in the piece so I made the collage on top of the glass framing. On collage no. 5 inside the frame I placed some painted watercolor paper. I like the feel it gives this artwork, because you have the neatness of the frame but you also feel and see the texture of the collage so much better because it is not behind glass. You can also see I have been trying to work with depth on collage no. 6, but with the glass protecting the artwork.

For these collages I ripped some magazines and the whole process was much more fun, uncontrolled and playful than it normally is. I don´t normally paint on the paper before using it. My focus has mainly been on the intertwining of prints  so I had a great deal of fun splashing around and getting dirty fingers.

The project runs for a month and started when I got this piece of text, on which I had to base my inspiration for my artwork:

As the world changed

Change can be gray hair, which rise
Light on the nose after long days in the shade
Poles melting
Rainforests that are overturned
Change can come from the neighbor and right on the other side of Mars
You can find it in your laundry basket and seek it out on the capital’s nightclubs
It may come as postmodern nausea over the passage of the hustle and bustle
As a friend more on facebook

A broken heart can change the world
A dead dictator can change the world
And you can sit and drink coffee while enjoying the spring sunshine and changing the world

Solveig Kolstad and Maj Oerskov - Aarhus’ Poetry Slam

The word that stuck with me most with me was the word change, so I brainstormed on that, here are my thoughts of the process:

Transformation, something that changes – cells changing from cancer, from bad to good! Google cells, inner universe, skin structure close up and cracking. All cells in our body are replaced after 7 years we are new people – huge change, Seven year itch. Some feared (cancer cells) made beautiful!. Inner change. Beauty and the Beast.

After this little brainstorming session I could clearly see that I wished to make a piece of artwork which revolved around beauty vs. ugly. And that things which are looked upon as ugly also have beauty as decease cells.

When I had made my artwork, I had to send it to another artist who would make something new with inspiration from looking at what I had made. The guy who got my artwork is a musician and I can´t wait to hear what he composes. Simultaneously we where four artist who started the 1´st april and the replay ends at the end of April, and by that time 28 artist´s will have made an interpretation of each others artwork.

Inspiration

The interesting thing about the project is it is innovative in its approach to creating accessible art for everyone – and offers unique flexibility that allows you to determine the final expression.You buy the four artworks i one box. The pieces consist of 4 boards in dimensions of 50 cm x 50 cm. They can be combined according to your specific preference and placed on the wall in any manner that suits your home.

The ART squares were represented on the latest UP fair, which is Scandinavia’s most inspiring trade fair for design, interiors and artwork. The artwork and Idea was found so innovating that it received a spot on the prestigious Trend stand.

One of the reasons that I agreed to be a part of this project is that Art Come True´s (ACT) sole purpose is to be supporting various art projects. Especially young children and kids. This is important to me because I was very creative as a child and did´nt really know how to channel my skills. I believe that it is possible to help children find their talent and make them believe in this, and the better they get the more courage they will have to make a living of their creativity, if this is a wish. In schools today being creative is not a high commodity which is a shame because everybody has different intelligences.

I was contacted by the super talented Sofie Ladefoged a interior designer, who had said yes to do an assignment for the Make a wish foundation. The project would be to transform the 11 year old Anna Maj´s room into heaven on earth. The reason for this is that she suffers from rare bone cancer and therefore is confined to room most of the time.

I donated two digital collages which fit perfectly to the vision that Sofie Ladefoged had for Anna Maj´s room.

The city of Skanderborg is in the starting process of building a new town hall. A part of this process involves a lot of different employees and brainstorming meetings where they use different creative technics and speakers to help them verbalize the areas which are important to them. As employees and to the citizens who will be using the town hall on a daily bases.

I was called in for at small piece of the process. The day started of with brainstorming in groups and I went around and listened to their words and took a bunch of notes. After this I had 1,5 hours to make a visual interpretation of the essence of what I had heard while walking around the groups. I had to make 6 moodboards because there were 6 groups who needed to use my artwork as a new and extended brainstorming platform. In addition to my work and meanwhile I was working (like a horse because the time was very short )the employees listened to a lecture about bee hives and how bee´s live. This was also a part of helping the employees think differently and reach out of the box while brainstorming.

The information we gathered during the day was to be collected and presented to the contractor and the architect and from this core information they will make the perfect new town hall.

I have chosen to show 3 examples of the photo collages / mood boards and shared a couple of the meanings behind them.

This first moodboard illustrates the need for flexibility. Both the people who will be working there but also the building, offices, and rooms. So the space can be used for different things. Maybe even so it is possible to exercise while working. An important value was also working together, which there will have to be made space for.

This mood board shows the wish to share knowledge and grow together. So spaces need to be made so this is possible, maybe this means a different canteen design. Another important item was the need for a shared path/ compass and a captain who can help them through the rough seas, this was very important to them but is more regarding the leaders and not the buildings.

Light and big areas with lots of space was also a top wish for the employees. This can mean good ventilation, tall ceilings, great lighting and maybe special lighting during the winter ( which prevents winter depression.) Big window areas so the outside can be invited in could also be a good idea.

They would be tested in creative mixing, sensory and knowledge against fellow outstanding mixologists. ART had been chosen as a platform. Therefor I was invited to be one of the four judges and my main focus was on how well the participants interpreted the theme and the artist and art they had chosen to design drinks inspired from.

Our judging was based on these criterias.

The two guys who won will go head-to-head in the finals in Stockholm.

Among the other judges there was Nick Strangeway from London based Strangehill consultants who develop world leading drink strategies and Brian from Gastromand, one of the hippest foodblogs in DK. So I was defiantly in good company.

Which 3 things would you leave behind in Dk if you win – “I would have to leave my dog (which would probably break my heart) also my apartment and my family would have to stay behind. These are really the most important things in my life, they ground me.”

Next question is which 3 things would I bring on the trip – “I am thinking my dog, because who want´s to have a broken heart, not me! I would bring my best pair of scissors so I could make tons and tons of collages out of all the scrap paper I find along my trip. My important working tools “the twins” aka my macbook and wacom pen so I can make some great artwork in every country I visit.”

I am good to go, me in the backseat of the green car.!

My keywords were old english roses in dusch colors. After being briefed over mail I started looking at roses and collecting the pictures of those which I felt were suitable for the series. As you can see in some of the pictures the girls wanted to use a double effect on the model. the reason for this was that It would be a bit to much to have roses on each picture.

I really enjoyed the luxury of receiving beautiful pictures as the base for my work, usually on my collages the attention is on the artwork, but with this project I had to make sure that the artwork wasn’t to overwhelming and would steel the attention from the pictures.

Stine Ladefoged is best known for Knitwear and jersey garments made with Scandinavian simplicity and innovative detailing. In her AW collection you will find inspiration in a theme of bones and the structure of the Eiffel tower. FINSK aka Julie Lundsten has won the prestigious Manolo Blahnik Award two years running and has been dubbed the Eames of footwear, she is London based and has established herself as a designer with a strong vision and unique, directional style. so unique that Lady Gaga is one of her clients. All in all two really happening talented designers, and the invitation has to sum up what they stand for.

A hot act at the moment Miguel (LA) will be giving a special performance at the party the very same evening at the venue KB3. This is quite a big deal so Miguel had to be in focus on this invitation, which also ment a lot of restrictions. Like pictures, fonts and how the text was written. All that said I must say that working under restrictions can be a lot of fun and I felt it was a way to test my talent, even despite all the things that had to be in a certain way, is it possible to make something I felt was cool. and I must say I did good.!

One of the most difficult processes during the making of the invitation was getting the pictures the designers and Miguel´s booking agency had provided me with to harmonize in the artwork and still attaining a clean cut look, without the clashing of to many colors and poses. The past months I have been very interested in sharpening my artwork, restricting the pictures in tightly drawn shapes, and this is definitely a big inspiration for me at the moment so I will be working more in this direction, so heads up.

Anyone who has see my collages know how much I love working with symmetry and this especially worked well in this artwork. I feel it gives the artwork a more interesting look without it looking to busy and unorganized.I still love working with the triangles and sharp corners and which once again support the style I am aiming for.

The invitation is to be printed on a sheet of A4 paper and folded in the middle. On the backside of the invitation you will find the address line and stamp. The closing fixture will be a small label. The idea is to get a great looking invitation but without having to use the extra money on envelopes and at the same time hopefully spike the guests interest by sending something different than what normally comes through the mail slot in the door.

The challenge at hand was that the collages Stilleben had fallen in love with was some that I had made over a year ago, so I wanted to update them but still keep the look and feel of the old ones. I think one of the reasons that they wanted me to use birds and foxes is that it is a graphically a well used element at the moment and it is easy to understand, because the brain can easily interpret what the elements are and there are not to many surprises. We like surprises but we also like some of the elements to be safe. One of the things they really like was the use of so many different patterns and textures. This gives some depth and dynamic to a black and white piece of artwork, so I kept that in my during the process.

When I embarked on this journey I was asked to make 3 prints. I wanted to make 3 different prints so costumers buying would be able to buy 3 totally different looks. The themes I chose to work with was geometric, animal inspired and abstract.

The geometric print was inspired by all the geometric artwork out there at the moment. I have a passion for different geometric shapes, especially triangles and I wanted to create a print that when it was worn could look like an oversize statement necklace and also just look like geometric print . The duality to me was interest

The animal theme made me think about new animal prints. For such a long time now we have seen deers, owls, foxes and leopards and it got me thinking of which animal could be a worthy opponent to these very very used images. I felt the jellyfish could live up to this. I have given the jellyfish arms and legs to give it a little twist. I like to make things where I get the brain thinking…”hmmm what is happening over here”. This in my opinion makes the prints more exciting in the long

With the abstract theme I drew the print by hand and afterwards scanned the finished artwork. The other two prints where made on the computer. Although the geometric print did start as a drawing in my sketch book. I wanted the abstract t-shirt design to have a very artistic feel to it, and added several items which repeat them selves in some of my other artwork, like planets, eyes and doodles. Basically it is a doodle shirt. One thing that was very important for me when drawing this shirt was to use different types of pens, so there would be some thin strokes and some stronger. This gives the print a bit more depth and variety.

To celebrate this merry occasion we are hosting a little get together next week, a bit like a flash intermezzo. Dec the 11. th, Tuesday at TANK, Mejlgade 48a. We start at 16.00 , have a blast and close the party at 18.30. Short and sweet. So come a see the prints and hang out in the laundromat atmosphere we will be creating for the day. We will have music inspired by laundromats, snacks looking like washing powder and foam plus  you can wash up your look buy winning one of the new t-shirts. I hope to see you.!
